Detailed Breed Information

Health

Welsh Springer Spaniels live 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions including entropion and glaucoma, and epilepsy occur in the breed. Ear infections are common given their floppy ears. Source from health tested breeders and request eye and hip clearances. Annual vet visits with ear checks keep most Welsh Springers healthy.

Grooming

Your Welsh Springer Spaniel has a flat, silky red and white coat with feathering that needs brushing two to three times a week. Check ears after every field session or swim and dry them thoroughly to prevent infection. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim feathering on the legs occasionally for neatness.

Exercise

Your Welsh Springer Spaniel needs 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, swimming, and running match their athletic sporting nature. They love water and will seek it out given the chance. Without enough activity they become restless. This breed thrives with an active family and outdoor lifestyle.

Training

Welsh Springer Spaniels are intelligent, eager to please, and generally trainable with positive reinforcement. They are sensitive dogs so avoid harsh methods. Start socialization early since they can be reserved with strangers. They excel in obedience and field work with consistent, patient guidance.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Adjust portions based on your dog activity level. Coat supporting nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids help maintain their silky coat. Monitor body condition monthly. Fresh water should always be available especially after field activity.

History

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniel breeds, with roots in Wales stretching back centuries. References to red and white spaniels in Welsh law date back to 1300 AD. Welsh hunters valued them for flushing and retrieving game birds across varied Welsh terrain. The breed is distinct from the English Springer Spaniel and was recognized separately by the Kennel Club in 1902. Today it remains a capable hunting companion and loyal family dog.
