Detailed Breed Information

Health

Boykin Spaniels live 10 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia and eye conditions including cataracts and collie eye anomaly occur in the breed. Heart conditions and exercise-induced collapse have also been documented. Source from health-tested breeders and have hips and eyes evaluated. This is a generally healthy sporting dog when bred responsibly.

Grooming

The wavy, feathered brown coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats. Professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks keeps feathering tidy and the coat manageable. Check ears after every hunt or swim and dry them thoroughly to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or after heavy field use.

Exercise

Your Boykin Spaniel needs 45 to 60 minutes of exercise daily. They love to swim, fetch, and work in the field. This is a hunting dog at heart and thrives with scent work and retrieving activities. Without enough activity, they become restless and vocal. Regular structured exercise keeps them happy and manageable indoors.

Training

Boykin Spaniels are eager to please and generally a pleasure to train. Positive reinforcement works extremely well with this breed. Start socialization and basic obedience early. They pick up field hunting skills quickly and naturally. Most owners find them responsive and enthusiastic training partners both in the field and in the home.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium-breed diet with good protein twice daily. Active hunting dogs need more calories than lightly active pets, so adjust portions to match your dogs actual workload. Watch weight carefully in off-season periods when exercise decreases. Omega-3s support coat health and joint function.

History

The Boykin Spaniel originated in South Carolina in the early 1900s, developed to hunt wild turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River Swamp. Alexander White found a small stray dog near a church in Spartanburg and passed it to his hunting friend Lemuel Whitaker Boykin, who developed the breed over the following decades. Hunters valued the dogs compact size, which allowed it to ride in small boats without tipping them. South Carolina named the Boykin Spaniel its official state dog in 1985.
