Detailed Breed Information

Health

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers typically live 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur given their athletic build. Autoimmune thyroiditis is also noted in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, energetic sporting breed.

Grooming

That medium-length, water-repellent coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows. Bathe only when needed. Their floppy ears need regular checks to prevent infection.

Exercise

Bred for "tolling" — luring ducks within range by playing along the shoreline — this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Fetch, swimming, and field work suit their playful, athletic nature perfectly. They genuinely love having a task to focus their abundant energy on. Mental stimulation through retrieving games keeps them happily engaged.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, energetic temperament. This breed excels in obedience, agility, and field activities with the right guidance.

Nutrition

A quality protein-rich diet suits this athletic, active breed well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming sessions. Watch their weight during less active periods.

History

Developed in Nova Scotia, Canada, this breed was bred with a unique hunting technique in mind — playing and frolicking along the shoreline to "toll," or lure curious ducks within shooting range, before retrieving the downed birds. Their fox-like reddish coat and playful energy made this technique especially effective. The breed remains the smallest of the retriever breeds. It's cherished today for both its unique hunting skill and devoted, energetic companionship.
