Detailed Breed Information

Health

Irish Water Spaniels typically live 10 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur given their athletic build. Ear infections are also a concern given their floppy ears and love of water. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, sturdy sporting breed.

Grooming

That tight, curly liver-colored coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Their ears need extra attention given their love of swimming. Bathe as needed, drying thoroughly afterward.

Exercise

Bred for retrieving waterfowl, Irish Water Spaniels absolutely love to swim and need close to an hour of activity daily. Fetch, swimming, and field work suit them perfectly. They have impressive stamina and a genuinely playful, clownish personality. Mental stimulation through retrieving games keeps them happily engaged.

Training

Intelligent and a bit independent, Irish Water Spaniels generally train well with patient, positive methods. Early socialization rounds out their naturally clever, somewhat reserved temperament. They genuinely enjoy mental challenges and water-based activities. This breed thrives with a consistent, engaged handler.

Nutrition

A quality protein-rich diet suits this athletic, active breed well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming sessions. Watch their weight during less active periods.

History

One of the oldest spaniel breeds, the Irish Water Spaniel was developed in Ireland in the 1800s for retrieving waterfowl in cold, rough water. Its distinctive curly coat and rat-like tail set it apart from other spaniels. Once a favorite among waterfowl hunters, the breed remains relatively rare today. It's prized for its intelligence, water skills, and notably comedic personality.
