Detailed Breed Information

Health

The Rafeiro do Alentejo lives 10 to 12 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia occur given their large, powerful build. Bloat is a real risk in this deep chested breed, so feed two meals daily and avoid exercise right after eating. Being a rare breed, ask breeders directly about any hereditary conditions present in their lines. Routine vet visits matter greatly.

Grooming

The dense double coat sheds moderately and needs brushing once or twice a week. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows, so brush daily during those periods. Bathe only when genuinely needed. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly. The coat is relatively self cleaning compared to other livestock guardian breeds.

Exercise

Your Rafeiro do Alentejo needs 30 to 45 minutes of purposeful movement daily. They are not high energy in the playful sense but they need daily walks and space to patrol. A securely fenced yard gives them room to do what they were bred for. Avoid intense exercise in heat given their large size.

Training

This breed is deeply independent and was bred to make decisions without human input across vast Portuguese plains. They are not challenging because they are slow. They are challenging because they think for themselves. Use positive reinforcement, start early, socialize extensively, and get professional help if you are a first time owner of a livestock guardian breed.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Two measured meals work far better than one large serving for this deep chested breed. Add joint supplements as your dog ages. Fresh water should always be available in large quantities given their size.

History

The Rafeiro do Alentejo is one of Portugal oldest breeds, developed on the open plains of the Alentejo region to guard large flocks of sheep against wolves. Shepherds needed a massive, independent dog capable of working through the night without supervision. The breed traveled with seasonal migrations across Portugal for centuries. Today the Rafeiro remains closely tied to its guardian roots and is rarely kept as a typical household companion. It is recognized by the FCI and remains rare outside Portugal.
