Detailed Breed Information

Health

Icelandic Sheepdogs typically live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Being a relatively rare breed helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine vet visits keep this hardy herding breed thriving.

Grooming

That thick double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt and cold. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding sheep across Iceland's rugged terrain, this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and active play suit their athletic, alert nature well. They have real stamina and a genuine love of cold weather and outdoor work. Mental stimulation through training keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Icelandic Sheepdogs generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning new tasks and excels at herding-related activities.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Iceland's only native breed, the Icelandic Sheepdog arrived with Viking settlers over a thousand years ago and has herded sheep across the island's harsh terrain ever since. Their isolation kept the breed relatively pure for centuries. Disease outbreaks nearly wiped out the breed twice in its history, requiring careful preservation efforts. Today it remains Iceland's beloved national dog, cherished for its cheerful, hardworking nature.
