Detailed Breed Information

Health

German Spitz dogs typically live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Patellar luxation and dental crowding occur given their small-to-medium size. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living breed with few major health concerns.

Grooming

That thick, fluffy double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

German Spitz dogs have moderate-to-high energy and need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and active play suit their alert, lively nature well. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and interactive games. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical movement for this clever breed.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please, German Spitz dogs generally train well with patient, positive methods. They can be a bit vocal, so teaching a quiet command early helps. Early socialization rounds out their naturally alert, friendly temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning and performing tricks.

Nutrition

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as they can gain weight if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available.

History

One of the oldest Spitz-type breeds, the German Spitz has roots stretching back centuries to dogs kept by Germanic and Nordic peoples. Bred primarily as a watchdog and companion, their alert, vocal nature made them excellent at signaling visitors. The breed comes in multiple sizes, including the closely related Pomeranian. Today it remains a cheerful, devoted companion across Europe.
