Detailed Breed Information

Health

Finnish Spitz dogs typically live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Epilepsy is also noted in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living breed with few major concerns.

Grooming

That dense, foxy coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for hunting birds and small game in Finland's forests, this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, scent games, and active play suit their alert, energetic nature well. They are famously vocal, using their bark to signal game location. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Training

Intelligent but a touch independent, Finnish Spitz dogs generally train well with patient, positive methods. Their tendency to bark needs early training to manage. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed thrives with a consistent, engaged handler.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Finland's national dog, the Finnish Spitz has hunted birds and small game in the country's dense forests for centuries. Their distinctive "yodel" bark helped hunters locate treed game from a distance. The breed nearly vanished before dedicated Finnish breeders revived it in the late 1800s. Today it remains a cherished national symbol and capable hunting companion.
