Detailed Breed Information

Health

Collies typically live 12 to 14 years. Collie eye anomaly, a hereditary eye condition, occurs in the breed, so screening for breeding dogs matters. Hip dysplasia and a sensitivity to certain medications, known as the MDR1 gene mutation, are also noted. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living breed.

Grooming

Whether rough or smooth coated, Collies need regular brushing — the rough variety needs it two to three times a week to prevent matting. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Nail trims and ear checks round out the routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding across open farmland, Collies need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and agility suit their athletic, intelligent nature well. They thrive with both physical movement and mental challenges. A bored Collie quickly becomes restless or vocal.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Collies are among the easiest herding breeds to train. Positive reinforcement produces excellent, fast results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally gentle, loyal temperament. This breed genuinely loves having a job and learning new skills.

Nutrition

A medium-to-large breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed in Scotland and Wales for herding sheep, the Collie's exact origins trace back centuries to working farm dogs. Queen Victoria's fondness for the breed in the 1860s boosted its popularity enormously. The famous television character Lassie cemented the Collie's reputation for loyalty and intelligence worldwide. Today it remains both a capable herder and a beloved family companion.
