Detailed Breed Information

Health

Caucasian Shepherds are a hardy breed, often living 10 to 12 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are concerns given their massive, powerful build. Bloat is a real risk in this deep-chested breed, so meal management matters. Otherwise, this is a robust, generally healthy guardian breed.

Grooming

That thick double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring more frequent brushing then. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred to guard livestock across vast mountainous terrain, these dogs appreciate space and daily activity rather than intense exercise. A securely fenced yard with room to patrol suits them well. They're not high-energy in the playful sense but need purposeful daily movement. Mental engagement matters just as much as physical exercise.

Training

Independent and deeply protective by nature, Caucasian Shepherds need a highly experienced, confident owner. Early socialization is absolutely essential to manage their powerful guarding instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This breed is genuinely not suited to first-time dog owners.

Nutrition

A large-breed formula with quality protein suits their massive, powerful frame. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid exercise right after eating. Joint supplements help support their substantial weight as they age.

History

One of the oldest livestock guardian breeds, the Caucasian Shepherd has protected flocks across the Caucasus Mountains for thousands of years against wolves and bears. Bred for raw power and fearlessness, these massive dogs worked independently across harsh, remote terrain. The breed remains closely tied to its serious guardian roots today, valued for unmatched protective instinct.
